Refreshing sector knowledge after three quiet years
Career breaks interrupt informal learning — the hallway talk, conference hallway chats, and daily tool changes that keep people current. Catching up is less about volume and more about choosing the right sources.
Pick three recent industry reports, one professional association newsletter, and two people who stayed in your field. Ask them what changed since you left: regulation, software, customer expectations, or team structures.
Summarise what you learned in a short paragraph you can reuse in cover letters. Hiring managers notice when a returner can name a current challenge rather than describing the job as it existed years ago.
If a certificate is expected in your sector, choose one that employers recognise in Germany and complete it before peak application season — not as an endless substitute for applying.
