Part-time return: how to propose Teilzeit without sounding uncertain

Many returners fear that mentioning Teilzeit will remove them from shortlists. In practice, German employers already plan for part-time and parental-return arrangements — especially in public sector, healthcare, education, and larger private firms.

Propose a pattern, not a vague preference. Example: 'I am seeking 28 hours across four days, with Wednesday reserved for family logistics, and I can be on-site Tuesdays and Thursdays.' Specificity signals seriousness.

Offer a review point after three or six months. Managers often accept reduced hours more readily when they know the arrangement will be revisited with real workload data.

Prepare a fallback: a temporary 60% start that rises to 80% once childcare is stable. Presenting options keeps the conversation collaborative rather than binary.
