What German employers actually ask about Elternzeit gaps
When you return from parental leave in Germany, the career-break question often arrives earlier than the skills questions. Recruiters want to know whether your preferred hours still match the role, how current your sector knowledge is, and whether you can start within a workable window.
A useful answer covers three points: the length of leave, any relevant unpaid activity (language courses, volunteer board work, freelance projects), and a clear statement of the working pattern you are seeking. Avoid over-apologising for the gap. Most German HR teams treat Elternzeit as a normal life chapter.
Practise a 45-second version for phone screens and a two-minute version for interviews. Include one concrete example of a skill you maintained — for instance, reading industry newsletters, completing a short certificate, or managing a household budget that mirrors project priorities.
If you took longer than the statutory leave window, name the reason briefly and move to capability. Interviewers care more about your readiness for the role than a detailed personal timeline.
