Building a 90-day job-search rhythm after a long career break

Planner and coffee on a wooden desk during morning planning

After two or more years away from paid work, motivation often arrives in waves. Some weeks you can write applications before breakfast; other weeks childcare or energy levels intervene. A 90-day rhythm accepts that unevenness.

Weeks 1–3 focus on clarity: target roles, commute limits, and a Lebenslauf that explains the break. Weeks 4–8 move into outreach — two to four thoughtful applications per week plus one networking conversation. Weeks 9–12 intensify interview practice and offer evaluation.

Block search time in your calendar the same way you would block a Kita pickup. Short, protected slots beat vague intentions to 'catch up this weekend.'

Track conversations, not only applications. A returner who speaks with three people in their former field often learns more about current salary bands and hybrid norms than from browsing job boards alone.
